Team.breathe.austria is very happy to announce the winning of this years Grand Award of the Shenzhen Design Award for Young Talents!
Team.breathe.austria stood out among 122 young designers or teams from 23 cities around the world that submitted their design entries for an international design award in Shenzhen. The final review took place on 20th and 21st of November in Shekou, Nanshan District, with seven renowned designers from various design fields serving on the final jury.
team.breathe.austria – Karlheinz Boiger, Lisa Maria Enzenhofer, Andreas Goritschnig, Markus Jeschaunig, Klaus K. Loenhart, Bernhard König and Anna Resch from Graz, Austria, won the Grand Award of US $ 30,000 and an opportunity to display their works at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris in May 2016 when the awarding ceremony is being planned to be held.

Global environmental issues are among the most important challenges of our time. In order to tackle the highly complex tasks of this challenge, we need the cooperation of many actors and to think and work across disciplines. For the project breathe.austria an independent transdisciplinary group of individuals came together – the team.breathe.austria.
The open and non-hierarchical way of working in a team, and collaboration with specialists from various disciplines, is based on the joint work in recent years on the subject of performance of landscape, vegetation and air. On this basis, a design was created, which concentrates innovative ideas on the theme of “air” compacted into a concept: “Breathe.Austria – A pavilion that breathes“. More than 2.4 million people experienced the hybrid landscape which combines nature and technology during the six month at the Expo in Milan.
Shenzhen Design Award For Young Talents
The design award called Shenzhen Design Award for Young Talents (SZ+DAY) was held for the second time by the Shenzhen City of Design Promotion Office and the Shenzhen City of Design Promotion Association (SDPA) in association and cooperation with UNESCO Creative Cities Network. This year’s competition was themed “Transformation: the Mission of Design”. This year’s competition was themed “Transformation: the Mission of Design” and invited designers under 35 years old, and architects under 40 years old, to join in.
According to SDPA, the goal of the design award was to encourage global young designers to make contributions to create greener, more environmentally friendly and sustainable cities. The project also aims to encourage exchange between young talents from different countries, cooperation between creative cities, and the sharing of experiences and ideas for developing creative and cultural industries. Coming from various design backgrounds, young designers submitted design entries ranging from product design to architectural design.
According to the Jury the winning team, Breathe Austria, won the grand award with its design for an environmental protection project.

Karlheinz Boiger
Co-Designer – Detailed Design Construction
Architect at hohensinn Architektur ZT, Graz
Karlheinz Boiger studied at the Technical University of Berlin and the Technical University of Graz. As part of Hohensinn Architektur, Graz he has implemented various projects since 1999. From 2011 to 2013 he was a lecturer at the University of Technology Graz at the Institute of Architecture and Landscape. The focus of his activities has increasingly been on an appropriate use of resources and timber construction in modern architecture, where he applies his long-standing experience in the field.
Lisa Maria Enzenhofer
Co-Designer – Project Leader Landscape
architect, landscape designer and researcher at ecosphere.institute / Lendlabor, Graz / Graz University of Technology, Institute of Architecture and Landscape, LANDLAB i_a & l
Lisa Maria Enzenhofer studied architecture in Graz and has worked in various architecture offices. Within her research field on urban resources she co-founded the collective Lendlabor in 2012. The outcome of her research work led to various projects and exhibitions in Austria, Poland and Brasil to promote social and ecological diversity. Since 2012 she has also been working as a researcher and teacher at the Institute of Architecture and Landscape of the Graz University of Technology. Founder of ecosphere.institute.
Andreas Goritschnig
Co-Designer – Project Leader Exhibition
Architect, Graz University of Technology, Institute of Architecture and Landscape, LANDLAB i_a & l.
After studying architecture at the Graz University of Technology and Linz Art University (supervised by Prof. Wolfgang Tschapeller), Andreas Goritschnig worked as a research and teaching assistant at the Institute of Architecture and Landscape LANDLAB ia & L at Graz University of Technology from 2009 to 2015. His work moves between the poles of architecture, society and ecology – he is interested in space as a meeting place of social, cultural and ecological processes.
Markus Jeschaunig
Co-Designer – Project Leader Exhibition
Markus Jeschaunig lives and works as a freelance artist in Graz. Inspired by the forces and dynamics of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere, his work unfolds at the interface between ecology, landscape, urbanism, technology, public space and activism. His work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions both in Austria and abroad. He studied art and architecture at the Art University of Linz, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Istanbul and the Technical University of Vienna. He was awarded the Arts Promotion Prize of the City of Graz in 2014 and the State Best Book Prize in 2014.
Bernhard König
Co-Designer – Project Leader
Architect, Landscape designer and researcher, Institute for Architecture and Landscape, LANDLAB i_a&l, Graz University of Technology. Founder of ecosphere.institute.
He studied architecture and urbanism in Weimar, Oxford and Zurich and has worked for Herzog & de Meuron in Basel, the Büro für Urbane Projekte in Leipzig and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation (IBA Urban Redevelopment 2010).
Klaus K. Loenhart
Co-Designer – General Planning,
Architect and Landscape architect, terrain: BDA | studio for architecture and landscape architecture, head of the Institute for Architecture and Landscape, LANDLAB i_a&l, Graz University of Technology.
Prof. Klaus K. Loenhart studied Architecture at the Munich University of Applied Sciences as well as Landscape Architecture and Architecture Theory at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, MA, USA. His interest in interdisciplinary approaches was piqued both while working at Herzog & de Meuron and while studying and teaching at Harvard GSD. Since 2003, he has been a partner at the firm terrain: architects and landscape architects based in Munich and Graz. In 2007 he became head of the Institute for Architecture and Landscape at Graz University of Technology. He has been leading the LANDLAB platform for interdisciplinary research at TUG since 2007.
Anna Resch
Co-Designer – Project Leader Interior Design

Anna Resch lives and works as an architect in Graz. As co-founder of the free collective Lendlabor, she initiates and implements projects related to building vacancy. Since 2012 she has worked as a university assistant at the Institute of Architecture and Landscape at the University of Technology Graz. She studied at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Technology Graz and in 2012 was awarded the Rudolf Wurzer Prize for Urban Planning.
